'Brooklyn Gang' Series 1959

"In the spring of 1959, I met a group of teenagers in Brooklyn who called themselves "The Jokers." At the time there were an estimated thousand gang members in New York City. A Youth Board had been formed which sent "Youth Workers" out to dissuade gangs from fights and to help socialize them. It was after reading a newspaper article about a skirmish in Prospect Park that I decided to find the gang and enter "the cool world" of their lives. At first, I attached to the youth worker assigned to them, but then stayed with the gang members as they stood late at night on the street corner, hung out in the candy store, or went to the beach at Coney Island with their girlfriends.

I was twenty-five and they were about sixteen. I could easily have been taken for one of them. My way of working is to enter an unknown world, explore it over a period of time, and learn from it. The previous year, I had traveled for a few months with a circus, making intimate photographs of a dwarf clown. Now I found myself involved with a group of unpredictable youths who were mostly indifferent to me. In time they allowed me to witness their fear, depression, and anger. I soon realized that I, too, was feeling some of their pain. In staying close to them, I uncovered my own feelings of failure, frustration, and rage."

I've been a Willy Wonka fan since forever (the Gene Wilder one, not that awful travesty that was the Tim Burton version). The inventing room in the original BLEW MY MIND.

Good Lord, I can't find any good footage of it!! And it doesn't even come close to covering what was really going on on the street!!
Ok so we didn't really do that much 'myah-myah' fashioning, but me and my gurrl L, did have a lovely dinner in Soho, then battled through the crowd to the Agent Provocateur Autumn launch on Mercer.
It was pretty cool, free champagne and cocktails, obligitory 'stylin dj',

I think I've found a potential new home.
I just described it on Facebook as a heavily tattood version of Sesame Street with more potential for drive-bys.
Although I haven't had much time here, I already know that I love it. I get an immediate sense of the 'real America' that everyone keeps preaching about. I get it now, L.A and New York expect you to be from out of town. Everything in those 2 cities is tailored toward that. Chicago is different, although it's probably because I'm only staying/hanging out in Wicker Park and not the city, I haven't heard ONE foreign accent!! Especially no Australian ones which is a welcome change after being in Santa Monica. Blerrghh.
One thing I really love about Chicago is that nobody is pretending to have money. At least not in this neighbourhood. That's kinda annoyed me about America in the past, they want you to spend spend spend, and get in more debt debt debt like it's a good thing. It ain't like that here, in fact I heard a girl say today "$3 for a soda!? Get the fuck outta here, I'mma give you a buck fifty and you gonna take it mmm hm"
